I woke with a startle
Opened my eyes to look at the time
And for a few seconds,
I've forgotten how to read the numbers
My head aches, my body still fatigued
And I tried relaxing again,
But once the machinery starts,
It is difficult to turn it off
I closed my eyes, hoping for refuge
In sleep, but the morning light
Teases me, splayed through moving leaves,
Light reflected off of broken pieces of mirror
My emptiness fuels my drive
And everything I do is meaningless.
